Do one last contents check

Open every carton, including the ones marked empty. Look beneath folded flaps and inside packing paper for hardware, receipts, remote controls, documents, and small household items. Keep a single “review” box for anything that needs another decision so it does not drift back into the recycling pile.

Set aside boxes worth keeping

Dry cartons with strong corners can be useful for storage or another move. Choose a reasonable number based on the space you actually have. Flatten the rest. Keeping every box “just in case” usually recreates the storage problem you are trying to solve.

Separate cardboard from packing material

Bubble wrap, air pillows, foam, plastic film, and fabric pads are different materials. Remove them before stacking cardboard. Do not assume a chasing-arrows symbol means your local curbside program accepts a plastic item. Check the responsible local program for each material.

Stage the pickup path

Make a stable stack near the agreed access point without blocking a hall, stair, garage door, or walkway. Count unusually large cartons and mention stairs, elevators, parking restrictions, or a long carry. Those details matter more than an optimistic guess that the job is “only boxes.”

Use this checklist

  • Check flaps and packing paper
  • Keep only sound boxes you will reuse
  • Remove plastic and foam
  • Flatten the recycling stack
  • Keep exits and walkways clear
  • Share access details before pickup
