Break boxes down where products are received

The person opening a carton is best positioned to remove the packing film and notice spills or coated material. Give that task a safe surface and a nearby cardboard staging point. Avoid carrying open, half-sorted cartons through customer areas.

Keep food packaging separate

Boxes with food, oil, or synthetic coatings need a different decision from clean shipping cartons. CalRecycle notes that food-soiled and coated paper products can belong to different collection systems depending on the material and local program. Use a review spot for questionable packaging rather than contaminating the clean stack.

Protect the aisle and the stack

Use a low, stable stack or approved container that does not block doors, electrical panels, sprinklers, or walking routes. Store cardboard away from mop sinks, open loading doors during rain, and leaking refrigeration. Dry material is easier to handle and more likely to remain recyclable.

Make the rule visible

A short sign works better than a long policy: “Clean, dry boxes only. Remove plastic and foam.” Train seasonal staff during their first receiving shift and name the person who answers edge-case questions. Review the area after large deliveries instead of waiting for closing time.

Use this checklist

  • Sort at receiving
  • Remove liners and packing plastic
  • Isolate food-soiled boxes
  • Keep aisles and equipment clear
  • Store cardboard under cover
  • Review after large deliveries
